Prescreen is a day-long event that asks prospective volunteers to demonstrate their companion animal's aptitude in pet therapy activities through a series of obedience and temperament scenarios.
This event costs $70 per team, or $50 for teams where the handler is age 65+ or the handler has previously been ratified with PeTS.
Teams with dogs will be asked to perform all obedience and temperament scenarios, while teams with cats will only asked to perform the temperament scenarios.
- 9:15am to 10:15am - The first group of teams (max. 4 teams) takes turns performing the obedience scenarios.
- 10:30am to 11:30am - The second group of teams (max. 4 teams) takes turns performing the obedience scenarios.
- 11:30am to 1:00pm - Obedience evaluators reach consensus on which teams have satisfied the obedience requirements and are eligible to perform the temperament evaluations. Evaluators will contact eligible teams with an afternoon time slot (15-min duration).
- 1:00pm to 3:00pm - Teams individually perform the temperament scenarios.
Things to Know:
The loss of a pet, whether an unexpected shock or an expected farewell, can be traumatic to the people who loved that pet. The depth of our bereavement is tied to the unconditional love we experienced. The intensity and effects of grief varies from individual to individual, but grief can have a profound impact on a person's emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
The Paws to Remember program facilitates a resolution through the grieving process with group support - we heal the heart through sharing.
There is no cost to attend a Paws to Remember session, held at the PeTS Center, located at 5204 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB. and facilitated by Gord Youzwshyn.
Please join us for a presentation on pet therapy, including what it is and isn't, what qualities we look for in our therapy animals, and the steps to becoming a ratified pet therapy team. Our target audience are individuals interested in volunteering with their companion animal.
This is a free event - membership in the society is not required to attend. You're welcome to bring a notepad if desired, but only you, your questions, and a passion for helping your community is needed. Prior to registering for this event, please take some time to review the information on our website, especially the list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Please note that this is a "humans only" event. We ask that you do not bring pets or young children.
We ask each attendee to register separately to provide an accurate headcount. Questions can be emailed to email@example.com. If you have already completed the PeTS 101 qualification quiz online, you are not required to also attend this information session; you may advance to the second ratification step, becoming a PeTS member.
