The Pet Therapy Training Weekend, is a two-day program designed to help prepare volunteers for pet therapy visits. The Pet Therapy Training Weekend is for all teams (dogs and cats).  A minimum of 4 teams is required for the program to run, to a maximum of 6 teams.  

Event Prerequisites: 

  • Ratification Step #4: Complete an Observed Visit session with a current PeTS Team Lead. 
  • Ratification Step #5: Have your animal's health assessed by your veterinarian no sooner than 45 days before PEP.  The examination and a fecal float test/parasite program should be documented within our Health Screening Form. 
  • Read the Handlers Manual and Incident Report Form prior to the Weekend start.

Saturday Scenarios

(10:00 am - 3:00 pm)

- Q&A on Handlers Manual/Quiz 

- Role playing of pet therapy scenarios; teams should arrive ready for pet therapy - groomed, pet bag, pet wearing appropriate collar/harness and leash. 

- 30 minute break for lunch (please bring with you).  We have a fridge and microwave that you may use. 

- Please bring a comfortable blanket or bed for your pet to relax on between scenarios.

Sunday Observation

(9:00am - 11:00 am)

- Onsite observed interaction with clients at one of our facility partner's location.

- The facility information will be shared with teams on Saturday, and individual 20-minute time slots assigned.    

- Teams that successfully complete Sunday's interaction will be assigned 6-9 practicum visits.
